Electrical Equipment Drives Business — Literally!

Importance of Electrical Equipment

When you think electrical equipment, think power supply.  For sure the term electrical equipment comprises a big and broad spectrum.  But if you think power supply, you will essentially get it.

Now go back in time and what powered just about everything at the start was manpower.  Few things where mechanized and automated.  If something was to get done, someone -- a person -- had to physically perform the task, do the job.  In some less developed countries of the world, that is still the case.  If a field is plowed, a person uses some kind of implement or tool to turn the soil.  The work is tedious and back-breaking.

Ingenuity and intelligence brought change.  People used animals to provide the power to pull the piece of equipment to plow the field.  The heavy lifting was performed by a powerful beast such as horse, oxen, cow, mule, or even elephant.  The field was plowed with less wear and tear upon a person and much faster.

With machines came steam.  Steam powered a whole new wave of mechanization in the creativity of people in business.  Steam engines were invented and used to power a new "animal" for plowing a field called a tractor.  One of these machines could replace quite a few animals to do the same work of plowing a field and more.  Eventually the gasoline and diesel engine was developed replacing steam, but the same job was performed.

And then came electricity.  Moving from something that had merely been thought about and studied to something that could be harnessed and used for power quite literally changed the world.  Thomas Edison essentially created the electric industry.  Today, we're not using electric tractors to plow the fields.  However, we're using electricity to do so many other things that it's mind boggling.  That becomes obvious when a storm causes your power to go out for awhile.

Electrical Equipment in Business

Beyond personal applications such as the lights and appliances in your home, electrical equipment drives most thriving business operations around the globe.  All forms of manufacturing involve some sort of electrical equipment.  Even getting fossil fuels from the ground involves various forms of electrical equipment.  Various components within computers are quite literally pieces of electrical equipment, not just the power supply running that computer.  An example of this is the microcontroller.

More often people talk about things like switchboards or distribution boards when they refer to electrical equipment.  They could even be referring to circuit breakers.  All of these are examples of electrical equipment though and it need not be confusing, although it often is to the layman or person not familiar with the industry.

Advances in Electrical Equipment

From everything we're hearing, many advances will be in the area of smaller and more portable.  While the overall science is pretty established, storage of and size of various electrical equipment could see some stellar advances in the not too distant future.  As economies improve and business becomes more robust, it is likely they will drive innovation in much the same way they have historically.

All in all, I see a bright future for many things involving electrical equipment.
